In its third collection as a part of the inspirational series, Satya Paul in association with Chateau Indage will uncork the Pop Art collection at the ITC Grand Central. Starting in the 50's, Pop art is a reflection of popular culture in art. It is neither praise nor condemnation but explores the everyday imagery that is so much a part of contemporary consumer culture. This art form has used media, advertising, packaging, celebrities and comic book art styles as various sources of imagery. Some leading artists of the style include Richard Hamilton, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol is famous as 'Pope of Pop' and has painted the things he loved the most, such as Dollar Bills, Campbell Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe, brand names and even celebrities as a token of his love for them.
Roy Lichtenstein had said, "Pop Art is industrial painting." He believed that the entire world would soon become industrial. Robert Indiana related pop with love - "Pop is love, for it accepts everything. Pop is dropping the bomb".
For Puneet Nanda at Satya Paul, it is a significant one of many steps to bring art closer to real life. This collection is an explosion of all rules associated with saris - it reduces the age of a sari by a whole generation. He has expressed the various moods and images of everyday life in the form of contemporary fashion.
For example, love is the message, expressed in playful hearts carefully hand painted in a multitude of colours; or simply the word 'love' in iconic 60's stencil typographic style in full colour or crisp black and white. There are classic Warhol style iconic prints of Bollywood greats, and in keeping with the branding sensibility, depicting his illustrious father and creator of the brand Satya Paul.
In the Lichtenstein inspired creations, brightly coloured pop graphics and brush strokes. To deliver the full burst of newness into the age-old drape, prints with barcodes, money, lips, Bollywood icons, and even Google have been given a place in fashion history by way of these prints.
He says, "It is the Satya Paul style expressed in the bold iconic pop style through an interplay of colors, balanced by embroideries and materials." The collection comprises of beautiful saris, salwar-kameez sets and dresses, and is available at select Satya Paul boutiques across the country.

Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt thrives on controversy. This time, he has chosen to cross swords with the media in his latest film, "Showbiz", produced by his brother Mukesh Bhatt. What prompted him to pick a bone with the media? Bhatt senior said that it was high time that the media was shown the "mirror" to have a fresh look at its ugly mug. "This will help it to climb down from the moral high ground on which it conveniently and pompously perches itself," Bhatt told.
Is "Showbiz" an indictment on the media in general? "Not at all. My intention is not an indictment on the media in general. All I am trying to do is to remove the veil of righteousness that a section of the media wears only in order to hide all its secret wrongdoings," Bhatt claimed.
For instance, Bhatt will seek to highlight how the media is unabashed when it willingly sells itself to the powers-that-be. "Let's face it, the media is not the holy cow that it poses itself to be. It is as corrupt as most of us are," said the director with characteristic candour.
Elaborating, the maker of some good films like "Arth", "Saransh”, “Naam”, “Sadak”,"Zakhm" and others, said that in the glamour world of films, the media works overtime to create idols out of ordinary actors. Then, when the time is ripe, it ungraciously and brutally sacrifices these very idols it created at the altar of undefined moralities. The ostensible reason being: it suits them both ways to maintain their position in the market. Bhatt added that the morality straitjacket a section of the media adorns is just a 'naqab' (veil). He observed that it was nothing but "double standards" when the media denies that it has sold itself to market forces.
"Showbiz", which releases next Friday, stars newcomers Tushar Jalota, (nephew of singer Anup Jalota) and Mrinalini Sharma, her second movie after "Apnapan" that released recently. In the movie, Tushar portrays a successful actor who is on his way to becoming a superstar. He is a media darling. Until the latter stumbles upon a fond secret that the star has been hiding.
The film, directed by well known choreographer Raju Khan, deals with the superstar's fight against the media, how they both struggle to survive and keep their credibility intact.

Three Marathi actors recently denied entry into a restaurant in a suburban Mumbai 7-star hotel isn't an isolated case. Celina Jaitley had a nightmarish experience at the same establishment. Recalling the incident, Celina said, "I went into the sports lounge of this hotel with a gay foreigner friend of mine for just 10 minutes. I saw a tall imposing middle-aged German guy making obscene gestures at me. At first I ignored him out of embarrassment. Then he got bolder and came up to me to tell me in German in picturesque detail what he would like to do to me.
"He didn't know I speak German fluently. That was it. I asked the hotel's authorities to deal with the situation, since they hadn't allowed my bodyguard in. Forget about challenging the German lecher, they said they didn't know who he was! Luckily I had seen him sign his room number on his bill."
When the posh hotel's cowardly personnel did nothing to help Celina, she left but returned the next day with three vans of cops, got the man out of his room and confronted him. "He fell to his knees and cried and begged saying he has a wife and children back home. He should've thought of them when he treated me to such vulgar intentions. I made him write an apology and then for his family's sake decided not to press charges," Celina said.
"The worst thing was, nobody in the hotel wanted to co-operate with me in dealing with this situation. Even some of my well-wishers advised me to forget about it. "What I want to know is, whom do these hotels cater to? Are they for us Indians? Or are all the amenities and facilities only for foreigners? Why are foreigners given such blatantly preferential treatment in these posh hotels?"
The actress decided to speak up on the matter after she heard about the humiliation of the Marathi actors who weren't allowed in because of their Kolhapuri slippers. "This isn't the first time that such an incident has happened. Some time ago, a dress designer friend of mine requested the same hotel's security to inspect his car in the portico, as he didn't want the clothes in the car to get wet in the rain. There was an argument. They slammed the car bonnet on his hand and fractured it...
"Don't they care about people who are not foreigners? Are these high-flying places so busy making big bucks that they've forgotten basic sense of decency?"

Item Girl Malaika Arora Khan, who did a stupendous dance display with Shahrukh in 'Dil Se' and 'Kaal', and played a forgettable character in 'Kaante' has finally bagged a full length role in Suniel Shetty's home production 'EMI'. Interestingly, known for doing item numbers in movies, Malaika has no item song in the film. "Actually, I'm quite nervous. It's a new challenge. I do have songs. In fact, my track is the only one with music. But all the songs are completely story-centric," she told.
Expressing her satisfaction regarding the shooting schedule of the movie, Malaika said, "The film was perfect for me because it needed just 10-15 days. There're lots of actors and four-five parallel stories in the plot. And besides they're shooting a stone's throw away from my house. I made it clear that I'd shoot only those hours that suited my son. Really, I don't need to break my head over the schedule".
Malaika had shared screen with Suniel five years ago in Sanjay Gupta's 'Kaante', and on being approached by him for a significant role in his home production the actress has all praise for Suniel for his thoughtfulness. "Suniel has made it so easy for me. More than him, I'm very fond of his wife Mana. She's a real sweetheart. Also I'm cast opposite Arjun Rampal. People say we make a really good screen pair. I'd like to believe that," said Malaika.
Apart from EMI, Malaika is likely to be seen doing a full fledged role opposite her husband in the remake of 'Amar Akbar Anthony' which his brother-in- laws will be producing. "My husband's brothers are getting together to remake 'Amar Akbar Anthony'. They better offer me the role opposite Arbaaz," Malaika chuckles hopefully.
On her item song with Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor in newly released 'Welcome', which is winning audiences attention, Malaika says;"Producer Feroz Nadiadwala and choreographer Ahmed Khan had asked me to do songs for them long back. In my typical way I was positive but evasive. This time I couldn't say no," said Malaika.
"An added incentive was that the unusual combo of Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor were dancing with me. The duo are doing their thing while I try to be all glam-and-lovely. Honestly, I had a ball shooting the song in 'Welcome'."

Item girl Rakhi Sawant, the runner up in the TV reality show 'Nach Baliye 3' filed a criminal complaint against Star Plus channel accusing it of cheating, after she lost in the final round. Rakhi, who along with beau Abhishek Awasthi lost the 'grand finale' to TV actors Sanjida Sheikh and Amir Ali, alleged in her complaint filed in the Oshiwara police station that the channel deliberately prevented her from winning the contest.
On its part the TV channel said it was a publicity stunt by Rakhi who is "not even an established actress". "We really don't know why Rakhi is going hammer against us. She has not yet established any direct contact with us, she has only been speaking to the media. Hence we believe that it is a publicity stunt," General Manager, 'Star Plus' Ketan Adyanath said. "Till the time she was in the race she had no problems but as soon as she lost in the final round, she alleged manipulation against us," he said.
The winner of the show was selected on the basis of SMS voting by the viewers. In a press conference, Rakhi alleged that voting was manipulated and SMSes in her favour were blocked. The channel was trying to promote its own shows by ensuring victory for those who act in them, she added.
Rakhi challenged other contestants saying, "I and Abhishek will be performing on 31st night, which will be a challenge for us and everybody else. People will come to know the real abilities of Rakhi and Abhishek."

Rahul denies directing 'Shourya'

Posted by News | 3:31 PM | 0 comments »

Just back from Kashmir after shooting Santosh Sivan's second Hindi film, Rahul Bose is surprised by stories accusing him of taking over the directorial reins of "Shourya" from Samar Khan. "Why would I direct Samar's film? If I want to direct a film, I'd happily find my own film to direct," Rahul told.
"'Shourya' is entirely Samar's film. Every single frame of the film is Samar's. These stories of me taking over are entirely fictitious. I've never done it and I never will," added the actor who plays a lawyer fighting for a man wrongly convicted on religious grounds in the movie.
Rahul says he doesn't like to mix the business of acting with the pleasure of direction, and vice versa. "As an actor my greatest joy is to understand a director's vision. Whether it's Buddadeb Dasgupta, Aparna Sen or Santosh Sivan - the journey of discovering their vision through my acting is what interests me and to make their vision mine. "I think it's the greatest insult to Samar to suggest that he'd stand by and let someone take over the direction in a story that has come from the centre of his heart. It's a very personal story. I don't believe I'm capable of a crude imposition of my will. That's the most cowardly thing an actor can do."
Shourya, would be Samar's second feature film after that wispy waffle of a film "Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye". This time Samar has gone from meetha to teekha.
If on one end Rahul is doing a serious socially relevant subject like "Shourya", on the other he has something as nakedly commercial as Shivum's "Ghost Ghost Na Raha" and Sanjay Chhel's "Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam". "I'm trying to balance out the entertainers with the more serious films. I don't want to be branded a serious actor all my life," said Rahul.

Hrithik Roshan, who is recuperating from a knee surgery, is all set to appear in the comedy "Krazzy 4", his father's first production without him as a hero. Hrithik, who has just returned from two weeks in Singapore, now leaves for Australia for further recuperation. He will return to perform an intricate item number for "Krazzy 4". To be directed by Raja Sen, the film is a comedy and stars Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Suresh Menon and Rajpal Yadav.
"Well, people always wondered how I could make a film without Hrithik. So here he is, all set to do his career's first item song," Rakesh Roshan said. "My brother Rajesh Roshan has already recorded the song and I'm putting up an elaborate set for the song to be shot in March 2008. However, let me warn Hrithik's fans, if I feel his knee is not up to it, I won't shoot the song," added the concerned father.
In fact, senior Roshan too has decided to take a long sabbatical from direction. But hold on. He is producing a film that is to start in July 2008 and will feature Hrithik in a never-before avatar.
"It's an action thriller with a strong love story at its heart. Anurag Basu, whom both me and Hrithik think very highly of, is directing the film for us," revealed Rakesh. It's been a time of turmoil for Hrithik. A troublesome knee injury finally decided to act up seriously.
"The doctors told him he needed to rest the knee completely, and I mean completely; otherwise it would give way. The injury got aggravated from all the stunts in his recent films, including 'Krrish'. "It got to a point where his knee gave way completely. The doctors said he had to take complete rest for two months or face the consequences," said Rakesh explaining the problem.
The year 2007 has been a quiet year for Rakesh as a director. "And so it will remain in 2008. I'm not directing any film. As I said Anurag Basu will direct my son in our next production. I've spent 40 years in the movie business and enjoyed every second of it, but now I need to devote time to my family, and to myself.
"I want to watch my grandson grow up. My hands are as full with production work as I want it to be." He promises "Krazzy 4" will be unlike the avalanche of comedies that have hit us in recent times.
"It's a funny film. But it's neither slapstick nor vulgar. Very frankly, I am very confused by the kind of films that are doing well. Audiences don't want us to make anything that pushes the envelope. I'd rather not direct films than make the kind of films that click these days."

Ace cameraman-filmmaker Santosh Sivan is all set for his next directorial venture 'Daastan', starring Rahul Bose, Victor Banerjee, Sarika and Anupam Kher. The shooting of the movie has already started and is said to be based on a burning issue. However, every unit member is reluctant to disclose that issue.
'Daastan' is expected to be like Sivan's most celebrated movie 'The Terrorist' (1999). Interestingly, Sivan has directed Bollywood top star Shahrukh Khan in 'Ashoka' which ufortunately failed badly at box office. On asking about the theme of the movie none of the actor gave any clue except Victor Banerjee, who just disclosed that movie is being shot in the most volatile part of the country. Victor expressed his excitement on being featured in Daastan saying, that he has never done a film like this which has a powerful theme.

The American company, Film Independent, which honours independent films and filmmakers across the world has announced nominations for its 2008 Spirit Awards. And one of the contenders is Indian actor Irrfan Khan. He is rubbing shoulders in the best supporting actor category with the stalwarts of world cinema like Steve Zahn, Marcus Carl Franklin and Kene Holliday for his performance as Tabu's silently progressive husband in "The Namesake".
The Spirit Awards, held a few days prior to the Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles, are usually seen as a precursor to the Oscars.
The unconventional looking Indian actor Irrfan can barely contain his surprise. "Mira Nair got the hugely prestigious Gotham award, and I was there to watch this historic moment," he said. "Barely 24 hours later comes this announcement about me. The Spirit award is to me every bit as prestigious as the Oscars. Unlike the Oscars, it's a totally independent award based entirely on merit rather than lobbying. So whoever gets nominated, gets in there solely by merit. I'm honoured to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Don Cheadle, Frank Langella and Philip Seymour Hoffman (all nominated in the best-actor category). Philip is my favourite actor in the world."
In fact, Irrfan met his favourite actor after the Gotham awards at a party. "His versatility has always taken my breath away. He started with just two scenes in 'Scent Of A Woman'. Somewhere I identify with him. When I met him it was a dream come true."

Bollywood actor Rani Mukherji may have to pay Rs 2.1 million to local authorities for the controversial plot of land she has bought near Shirdi in Maharashtra, officials said on Tuesday. "An inquiry over the illegal transaction and cancellation of the previous revenue records were made on tuesday," said Ahmed Nagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nandkumar Suryavanshi over telephone.
The star's private secretary and her lawyer on Tuesday attended the first hearing of the case related to the land deal in the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office at Ahmed Nagar.
Suryavanshi further stated that, according to Section 29 of the Land Ceiling Act, Mukherji will have to pay 75 per cent of the market value of the land to the government. Thus, she will have to pay Rs.2.1 million.
Mukherji had bought 11 guntas of land in 2005 from an agent, Sampat More. The property comes under the category of a new tenure land, which can be bought only with the permission from a competent authority of the district. More had not registered the property in his name when he bought it in the 1980s and sold it to the actor who purchased it without verifying the documents, landing in trouble. The district authority has not chosen not to transfer the land in her name till the inquiry is completed.
Mukherji has been summoned on December 31 for the second hearing. The final hearing and the judgement will be given by the divisional commissioner later.

Aaja Nachle fails at box office

Posted by News | 11:35 AM | 0 comments »

Madhuri Dixit's comeback film 'Aaja Nachle' has failed to kindle fire at box office even after being involved in controversy which generally act as a catalyst for a film's business. The Box Office gives a poor report of the Madhuri starer. The movie opened with a poor response of 25 to 30 per cent across the country and is still struggling in pulling crowd to the theater. This is a severe blow to the Yash Raj Films as there last venture ?Laga Chunri Me Daag? too fell off at the box office.
According to the vice president of operation at Fun Cinema, Deepak Taluja, 'Aaja Nachle' hasn't got a great opening as compared to other Yash Raj movies. "The film registered 50 to 55 per cent occupancy in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. With up to 60 per cent in Rajasthan and Mumbai it was a little better over the weekend. Only in Bangalore we recorded 90 to 95 per cent occupancy," he said. However, seeing the curiosity among the masses following the ban, the business of the movie is expected to rise in the coming days.
The movie was earlier banned in UP, Punjab and other states following the protest by the Dalit community over the objectionable line of the title song in the movie- 'Mohhale me kaisi maara maar hai, bole mochi bhi khud ko sunar hai.' However, after the apology from Yash Chopra and the removal of the offensive lyrics, the ban was lifted.
The weak response of the movie after the failure of 'Laaga Chunri Me Daag' is also an evidence of the fact that women oriented movie are still not on the priority list of the audience in India.

The marketing strategies of big retail companies does not seem to think beyond associating Bollywood glitterati with the brand in their wild chase for recognition and publicity. While the brand effortlessly gets a recognition as soon as a celeb is tuned in, the celebs do not return empty handed either. It is a give-and-take relationship that the brands share with the illustrious cream of the crop. No! We are not talking about money that the celebrities make with this association. Rather, they get a favourable opportunity to promote their upcoming ventures. One such hot topic which was in the news was Shah Rukh Khan being accused of using cricket as a platform to promote his new venture 'Om Shanti Om'. Another instance that can be cited is Deepika Padukone's recent visit to the capital to inaugurate a store where she couldn't stop gushing about her debut venture 'Om Shanti Om'. These are just two from a pool of innumerable examples. The nation's Capital - an impregnable target of all the incoming brands - recently saw another such afternoon of mushy brand-celeb relationship.
Pushing up the tempo of its retail foray, the 'Gitanjali Group' has initiated a flurry of activities to boost consumer interest in its sparkling silverware collection at their exclusive Gruppo Greggio store. Following its credo of raising shopping experience to a higher plane, Bollywood landed at the store on Sunday afternoon. Jimmy Shergill, Dia Mirza, Mausumi Udeshi along with producer/director Sanjay Gupta visited the Greggio showroom located in Gurgaon - satellite town of Delhi, undoubtedly for a lucrative reason.
The Bollywood stars came to the city, probably unfamiliar with the intricacies of the silverware at the Greggio store. But they sure were acquainted with their soon to be released film 'Dus Kahaniyan'. It cant be a co - incidence that all three are a part of the film and were present at the same time at the same do. They came. Delhiites witnessed. And they left with a mark of their upcoming film. But just how much leverage are they going to get out if this visit, only time and the audience can tell.
"It is always a special occasion and a pleasure for us when celebrities lend their aura to our products and stores," said Mehul Choksi, Chairman, Gitanjali Gems. Tell us something we do not know!

Taking a cue from the clash of "Saawariya" and "Om Shanti Om" at the box office, director Rajkumar Santoshi is playing safe by postponing the release of his new movie "Halla Bol" by two weeks. Though the director was out of the country when the producers took the decision to shift the film's release, Santoshi is all for it as "Taare Zameen Par" and "Welcome" were to be released on the same day. "Since there're two other big films scheduled for December 21, I see no harm in being cautious and shifting "Halla Bol" forward. The film's leading man, Ajay Devgan, sat down with the producers and decided this. I agree completely with their decision," said Santoshi.
Santoshi is currently in Los Angeles finalising the technicians for his two lavish period films, one on emperor Ashoka, which he will begin shooting in the beginning of 2008, and the "Ramayan", which comes at the end of next year. Both the films have actor Ajay Devgan in the lead.
He said, "Both these films require tremendous pre-production detailing. I can't afford to think about 'Halla Bol' at the moment. As far as I'm concerned, I've done my best. Contrary to reports, the movie is not set in the film industry. Yes, the hero is a film actor and there're passing references to stars and events. But Ajay could be any professional. 'Halla Bol' , a wakeup call for our collective conscience."

An animated film featuring a conversation between students and teachers on environment conservation was launched in the national capital on Monday to urge children to preserve and protect nature. The 60-minute film, "Our Environment - Let Us Protect It", has been developed by Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF), an NGO, in partnership with Coca-Cola India. Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar launched the English version of the film while Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit unveiled the Hindi version. It will also be available in Marathi.
The film, with important facts on environmental pollution and ways to prevent it, will be shown by Coca-Cola in more than 5,000 schools in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh."This initiative is focused on children because the future leaders need to be educated to preserve the environment. If we succeed in making them understand its importance, they will easily convince their parents too," said Narayan G. Hegde, president BAIF Development and Research Foundation.

King Khan and the recently voted second sexiest Asian woman, Priyanka Chopra did not very well come to par with their celebrity status during their recent visit to the town. Waves, pleasant glances and smiles is all that the duo could provide to a chance-thirsty crowd at New Delhi's Jaipur Polo Grounds. No doubt, the two 'graced' their presence at the Tag Heuer Precision Polo Cup solely to endorse the brand. SRK could not either leave behind his 'Chak De India' hangover, while Priyanka stayed more on the sidelines deluged under SRK's ever-following grandeur.
Bringing together few elite women from the glamour circle on the grounds, SRK decided to re-enact 'Chak De India' in front of the gathering which has long gotten out of the patriotic hype.
SRK in Chak De moodElegant Nafisa Ali along with other socialites like Manpreet Brar and Kalyani Chawla decided to step into the shoes of women's hockey team while Shahrukh - of course - played the role of a coach. A bunch of amateurs on the ground tried to manage a ball creating quite a scene while SRK added to it with his constant irrelevant and also to some extent, indecent talks. He might have realized his act since he finally said, "I need to retire!"
The polo game and the gushing horse-riders stayed away from the limelight during the whole Sunday afternoon. The Bollywood duo was the cynosure of all cameras and eyes obliging all with a smile. And when they thought that there job is done, they sneakily snugged themselves into their cars and departed, waving and smiling.

With Madhuri Dixit's comeback film "Aaja Nachle" already attracting the crowds - and controversy - there is talk on her next move. Is another film in the offing? "I haven't signed anything new. I haven't planned any new project as yet. And it isn't because I want to see how my so-called comeback is accepted," Madhuri said. "The box office outcome of 'Aaja Nachle' has nothing to do with my future in films. I'll sign another film if I like it," she said. So how does Madhuri plan to balance her domestic duties in Denver, Colorado, with her movie manoeuvrings in Mumbai? She pondered for a while and said, "We'll see how it goes. Maybe I could again shoot in India during the kids' vacations. Or then the film could be shot in the US."
Madhuri's sons Arin and Ryan have seen mom's films in passing. "They've seen 'Devdas' fully. They found me strange in that film because I was bedecked and bejewelled from head to toe. What I've worn in 'Aaja Nachle' is how they see me dressed at home. 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' was another film that was pretty close to me in dress and thought," she said.
She cuts down all speculation about her unwillingness to be in India to promote "Aaja Nachle". The actress said, "What rubbish! Yashraj Films and I had decided that I should be here 15 days before the film's release. I think two weeks is a decent period to acquaint people with a film."
Madhuri admits she had never gone all-out for any of her earlier films. "Times have changed. Now you need to tell people to come and see your film. It's like inviting guests for a daughter's wedding. And you know what? I'm enjoying it."

'Rawalpindi Express' Shoaib Akhtar has got an offer from Bollywood to act, and is considering the proposal. "I have a piece of news for you. I have got an offer from Bollywood," Akhtar disclosed to mediapersons on Sunday. Akhtar said the producer and director would meet him with the script during the December 8-12 third Test against India in Bangalore.
"I will decide whether to work with them once I listen to the script," said the Pakistan fast bowler. Akhar said he has watched the two recent Bollywood releases - Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya' and the Shahrukh Khan-starrer 'Om Shanti Om'. I have also heard about the movie 'Chak De! India', he said.

John Abraham-starrer "Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal" will have a special screening on the last day of 38th International Film Festival of India Monday at the request of Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi. Neelam Kapoor, director in the Directorate of Film Festival, announced this at a press meet.
"Dasmunsi has requested to screen the film for the football lovers here. However, he won't be able to attend it as he is busy with the parliament session in Delhi. The film will be shown at 2.30 pm Monday," said Kapoor.
Informed sources said John, who plays the main lead in the film, will attend the screening. Supporting actor Arshad Warsi is also expected to be there. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film - about a dying Asian football club in London - got a mixed response when it was released two weeks ago.
Kapoor said renowned Bengali filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony and Kabir Bedi will be the compere.

A day after banning the screening of Madhuri Dixit's come back film 'Aaja Nachle', the Punjab Government lifted the bar on Sunday. The Uttar Pradesh Government lifted the ban on Saturday after an apology from film producer Yash Chopra and chopping of lines from the title song, which certain section of Dalits felt was derogatory. Central Board of Film Certification chairperson Sharmila Tagore also rendered an apology for giving a nod to the title track of the film with lines "Mohale mein kaisi maara-mar hai, bole mochi bhi khud ko sunar hai" that offended the Dalits.
The Haryana Government has also banned the screening of the film in the state. On Friday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the film be banned all over the country.Â

Veteran actor Om Puri had a tough time getting into the skin of the character of Zia-ul Haq, the late Pakistan president, in the international venture "Charlie Wilson's War" also starring Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks. The diligent actor that he is, Puri was in a fix. "I didn't know how to play former president of Pakistan Zia-ul Haq in Mike Nichols' 'Charlie Wilson's War'," Puri said. There's practically no visual document on him, which I could consult. In any case I would not want to imitate the man's physical mannerisms. I just want to get a grip on some of his personality traits to understand the working of a very clever mind," explains the veteran actor.
He finally consulted actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha who knew Zia. "He knew Zia-ul Haq very well, met him many times. Shatrughan told me something very interesting about the Pakistani leader. He used to laugh a lot. I incorporated that trait into my performance," Om Puri said. "I didn't want to play him as a caricature. There's always the danger of going overboard. But, Zia had to be portrayed as a bargainer...a brotherly though bullying bargainer," he added.
The prolific Nichols has made classics like "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf" and "The Graduate" early in his career. He also directed Meryl Streep in two of her best-known works, "Silkwood" and "Heartburn" (both based on real incidents). Apparently, Nichols' last film "Closer" about a marital quartet featuring Julia Roberts was banned in India for its strong sexual verbal content.

The intense 'Rang De Basanti' actor Kunal Kapoor might have finally got lucky in the Bollywood arena. Kunal who has been paired opposite Madhuri Dixit in the latest Yash Raj flick 'Aaja Nachle', is all set for the mainstream limelight. Although working opposite the Bollywood queen might have been a bit of a pressure for Kunal, he is still on the seventh heaven knowing well that he has just completed a film with his all-time favourite actress. "I am a big fan of Madhuri. If I would have been a painter, I would have stepped in the shoes of M F Hussain and expressed myself through portraits of Madhuri," Kunal said with a blushing smile.
The actor still marvels at his chance of getting to work with Madhuri. "It took me a really long time to actually believe my luck that I am working with Madhuri," he said. "She is very surreal and at the same time, larger than life. Madhuri helps save Yash Raj Films' expenses just because when she enters for the shoot her smiles lights up the whole screen. She is humble, down-to-earth and also mischievous."
As media kept calling Kunal a second hero next to Madhuri, the bewildered actor finally jolted and said, "How can you say that there is no hero in the film when I am there?" Madhuri Dixit, who accompanied Kunal alongwith other crew members to the capital, saved his side and expressed her positive impression of Kunal's work. "Kunal plays an important part in the film and to term him a second hero would not be right," said Madhuri.

Action time again for Suniel

Posted by News | 11:12 AM | 0 comments »

After trying his histrionic in comic films, Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty is planning to do a comeback in action thrillers. Suniel's own production house 'Popcorn Entertainment', whose last venture 'Rakht' proved to be a dud at the box office, is to produce an action thriller, starring the actor himself. The movie which is inspired from a Hollywood action film, 'Paparazzi', will be directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia of 'Haasil' fame. "It's been a while since I did a full-on action film. So much time has passed since my last stunt-special that people have forgotten that side of me," said Suniel.
The actor who started his career in the industry in early nineties with "Balwaan", has build up an image of an action hero in Bollywood. Though he has worked with many successful directors, the actor is still to give a solo hit. Interestingly, Suniel, known for macho roles in movies, got his only Filmfare award for ' Dhadkan', a romantic tale. On being asked about his next release, Suniel informed that its again a comedy. The movie titled '123' which is to be released soon, has been directed by Ashwin Dheer.

Former South African cricketer and newly appointed coach of team India, Gary Kirsten , has confirmed he will join the team for the last two test against Australia later this month, though his stint as a effective coach of the team would start from March, 2008. India's interim coach, LalChand Rajput, will be coaching the team for the first two test in the upcoming series Down-under. The delay in joining of the newly appointed coach, is according to Kirsten because of the late approach by the Indian Board. Kirsten has to meet his commitment in South Africa before taking up his new job. "The reality is that I was approached quite late by the Indian board, and in accepting the job, I told them that I had commitments over Christmas and New Year. But, it looks like we are close to resolving that issue now, and I will join the team for the last two Tests," said the former South African opener.
In a conversation with an Australian newspaper Kirsten said, he will not impose his ideas on the team, but would like to help the players on the tour down- under. Giving enough indications of his approach, which perhaps would be the guiding principles of his job, Kirsten said, "I will not be coming in and imposing my ideas on them. That would be wrong. Instead, I will try and blend in and help any way I can."
During this discourse Kirsten did share that he had a discussion with Indian skipper, Anil Kumble, over his assistance to the team in the last two test matches against Australia. Kirsten, who has been the high performance manager of the South African Cricket, for last two years, does'nt have any prior coaching experience, but he is still confident of making a positive impact on the team. "I take plenty of confidence from the fact they approached me, and obviously believe in what I can bring to the team," he said. "Over time, I will look to put some new ideas for the players, but I will not be doing that midway through the tour of Australia", he added.

The much awaited comeback movie of Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit's 'Aaja Nachle' got a severe jolt the day it released. In a late Friday night development, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati banned the screening of the film in the state over an alleged derogatory insinuation to Dalits in a song. The film, which marks the return of Bollywood queen Madhuri Dixit, was released on Friday and expected to be a hit at the box office. Mayawati also shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to ban the movie across the country. The Chief Minister has taken strong exception to a particular line in a song, which, according to her, was derogatory to a section of Dalits.
Principal secretary to the Chief Minister Shailesh Krishna told reporters: "A song in the movie contained certain derogatory insinuations against a particular Dalit community, which was also in violation of the spirit of the Indian Constitution."Confirming enforcement of the government order, Lucknow District Magistrate Chandra Bhanu said: "We have already ensured that the screening of the film is stopped with immediate effect." According to him, "All current shows of the film in different movie halls have been stopped."
However, the makers of the movie are quick to respond. In order to break the deadlock they've obliged Maya's call and on Friday night decided to delete the controversial line from the song. "We didn't set out to make a film which would offend any sensibility. It's not our intention to hurt any section of the society. We made the film in good spirit and faith. And if for some reason it offended the sensibilities of some people, then the decision we have taken is we'll delete the line straightaway", the film's director Anil Mehta said.

Her sweet and delicate presence in her last release "Ahista Ahista" was built on her image of an unspoilt beauty in pursuit of life's mysteries, but Soha Ali Khan is keen to change that by doing funny and dark roles. "'Ahista Ahista' was the first film to feature me as 'the heroine'. So far I've been part of ensemble casts like 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Pyaar Mein Twist'. Yeah, I agree films like 'Antarmahal', 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Ahista Ahista' have had me play timid characters, though I'm not the least like that in real life. I'd like to do something funny and maybe something a little dark," Soha, whose "Khoya Khoya Chand" was released on Friday said.
"I think I've been vulnerable often enough on screen. Now I'd like to tap other aspects of my personality. That opportunity to play a darker character than the characters I generally play would occur in Sudhir Mishra's 'Khoya Khoya Chand'. I want to do something that would make people laugh. In real life I've a lot of self-confidence and I think I've a sense of humour."
Soha is happy with her career. "I'm happy with the kind of roles I'm getting. I want to discover the limits of my range so that I'd know where to go. I'm pleased I'm getting to work with directors like Rituparno Ghosh, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Shivam Nair and Sudhir Mishra. I'm working with directors who will teach me a lot. I'm glad after 'Rang De Basanti' I'm doing something as different."
The only films Soha has signed post-"Rang De Basanti" are the ones with Sudhir Mishra and Aparna Sen. "I haven't signed on anything else. Many of the offers are highly avoidable. I'm told I'm very accommodating at the time of reading a script and I'm very critical when the film comes out. I'm told it should be the other way around."
The actress takes her advice from her mother. "Finally I go by my own instincts. But, yes, amma watches all my films. She loved 'Rang De Basanti'. She thought the film was far better than the script." Soha brushes off rumours of a link-up with Abhay Deol.
"They say we're more than friends because we go to the same gym. A lot of people go to the same gym. That's hardly reason to link us together. But I'm not going to let such talk affect my friendship with Abhay. We know where we stand,? she said.
"I don't think I give people reason to believe I'm involved with any of my co-stars. I'm just a normal friendly girl. I'm sensible enough to handle myself with dignity. Even though my mother doesn't come to the sets I've someone accompanying me all the time. My spot boy is someone who has been with our family for 13 years. He's my bodyguard-cum-manager."

Actress Esha Deol, daughter of 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini and 'He Man' Dharmendra, has became selective in choosing film after the debacle of her last two film 'Darling' and 'Cash'. Confessing that she has done some futile project earlier in her career Esha said "I was not very selective earlier. I have a large heart and I can't say no to my friends. However, with time one has to realise the importance of picking up the right kind of projects."
The actress who made her debut opposite Aftab Shivdasani in the unpopular "Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche" has worked with some prominent filmmakers like Yash Chopra, J P Dutta and Mani Ratnam in four year of her Bollywood career, and now wants to explore her range of acting and bring variety in her roles. Esha came into fame with her hot and sultry look in 'Dhoom' and a dignified character in 'Yuva.' She also got critics appreciation for her outstanding role in Vikram Bhatt's 'Ankahee'.
On her desire to bring variation in acting, the actress said, "Now I want a director to come with a script, which can bring out the bratty quality in me on-screen. I want every time to play a different role."
On being asked about her acting with mother Hema Malini and sister Ahana, the actress said, "I would love to share screen space with mom. However, nothing is planned yet. I am waiting for the right script to come. As far as Ahana is concerned. If she wants to cast me in her movie I will work with her." The actress at present is waiting for her upcoming comedy flick 'Hijack' opposite Shiney Ahuja.

The director of 'Khoya Khoya Chand' Sudhir Mishra has denied that his new film is based on the life of Bollywood legend Guru Dutt. The movie which has the background of Bollywood of 1950 is set to release on December 7. "I've people, incidents and films from the 1950s in the background. I've captured the essence of the times by using my characters as an entry point into that era," Mishra told.
Speaking about the starcast of the film, Mishra said that all the actor has done a commendable job and Soha Ali Khan has emerged as an actress this time and had worked at her best. The music of the movie has been composed by Shantanu Moitra and takes the listeners back to the era shown in the film. "The producers Adlabs have left no stone unturned to give me the financial freedom to recreate that era gone by. Also, Shantanu's music really helps in recreating the aura of the era."
This is for the first time that Mishra has tried making a romantic film after directing dark brooding politics in 'Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi,' 'Calcutta Mail' and a life of prostitute in 'Chameli.' The director's next project 'Devdas' is based on the novel of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

Actor Hritik Roshan is soon to leave for Singapore for treatment of his knee injury, which he developed while doing some daring stunts for his movies Krissh and Dhoom 2. Hritik, whose next movie Jodha Akbar is all set to release in January 2008 had torn the ligament in his knee, but has continued working despite tremendous pain. But now the actor find the need to recuperate from it. "While working towards fulfilling my commitments to all my work - ads and film, I did not care much about my knee pain and have neglected my doctor's advice to not put any stress on it and take complete rest," said Hrithik in a press release. However, as soon as he is finished with the treatment, he will be back during the premiere of his new release.
Jodha Akbar will be Hritik's first release after Dhoom 2, which brought the actor his third Filmfare award. Interestingly, Jodha Akbar casts Aishwarya Rai opposite Hritik who was his heroine in Dhoom 2. So the audience can expect the magic of duo which they created in their last movie. However, the movie is a big challenge for director Aushotosh Gowariker whose last movie Swadesh, though brought critical acclaim but failed badly at box office.

Juhi Chawla, who keeps away from the limelight, says only substantial roles that suit her age can persuade her to step out of her comfort zone. "I don't want to do roles that don't enthuse me. I'd rather be at home because there I've such lovely things happening to my life. I only want to do scripts that touch me. That's why I accepted Onir's 'Bas Ek Pal' and Nikhil Advani's 'Salaam-e-Ishq'," Juhi said. She has just said no to a comedy with Anant Mahadevan. "He has an excellent script but somehow I don't feel it's right for me. I love doing comedy. But this role would've suited me a few years ago. See, I'm not under any false illusions about my age. I'm married and I've kids and the audience knows that. So I'd like to do roles that suit my real-life role.â??
"I like playing wife because I'm comfortable doing it. I don't want to be that bubbly collegian running around pubs. I don't want audiences to turn around and say, 'Why isn't she playing her age?' I was happy doing the cameo with Shah Rukh in 'Paheli'," Juhi said.
Nowadays she gets offers mainly to play mom or wife. "That's what suits me. 'Bas Ek Pal' and 'Salaam-e-Ishq' belonged to two totally different genres. 'Salaam-e-Ishq' was a big glossy Bollywood film and Nikhil Advani handled me very well. He was open to suggestions but still the master on the sets. Very organised."
Although she is not in touch with the film industry, Juhi gets time to nourish her friendship with Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza. "Though we are not working together, Shah Rukh and I continue to share a wonderful rapport. Then there's Aziz Mirza who's like a father figure. He keeps planning something or the other. I'd like to work with him again after 'Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman' and 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani'. He's a joyful filmmaker, my kind of director. But that's it. I live in town and the film industry is another world."
Hiccups apart, Juhi is happy. "It's not as if I wake up every single morning and say, 'My god, what a wonderful life!' But no complaints." Talking about her acting journey, she said, "Aamir Khan se Rehaan Engineer tak - quite a journey," Juhi chuckled about one of her first co-stars and her co-star in Onir's "Bas Ek Pal".
Things couldn't get any better for Juhi. "Well," she sighed. "Career-wise I'm doing the kind of work I believe in. In 'My Brother Nikhil' I was the narrator. The story was from my point of view, but I guess someone else could've told the story, huh?" She looks back fondly at the times that have rolled by.
"I had a great time, if not shooting a film then just being with the cast crew, laughing hard with co-stars, grumbling and giggling. I still enjoy myself on the sets. But there're many new talents, and it's great to be in their company. The industry has changed, and for the better." She doesn't crave to do more work.
"I like it the way it is right now. Not too much, not too little. This way I've time for everything I want to do. If a good role comes up I'm happy to do it. But I won't choose quantity over quality. That wasn't case earlier on. Now I'm picky." Recently she was seen with Manoj Bajpai in choreographer Ganesh Acharya's directorial debut "Swami".
"It was not exactly hardcore Bollywood but not entirely offbeat either. It was a simple and sweet story. My new film is new director Vivek Sharma's 'Bhootnath' where I get to play mom."

Australian speedster Brett Lee, will be seen soon in a Bollywood film based on cricket. The film titled 'Victory,' featuring Brett Lee is to be directed by Ajit Pal and will also feature former Australian cricket legend Allan Border and Lee's fellow cricketer Mike Hussey and Jason Gillespie and some other international cricketers. Speaking about his debut in Bollywood, Lee whose album with Asha Bhonsle, 'You're The One for Me' released in 2007 said, "I am excited for making my Bollywood debut in 'Victory' and I'm hopeful that the role of a cricketer will come naturally to me."
The shooting of the film will commence in Australia in January 2008 during the India-Australia cricket series and will feature more than 20 current and recent cricket stars from around the globe. Earlier, the biggest hit of 2007 'Chak De' and 'Hey Baby' were also shot in Australia.
Apart from the Australian cricketers the movie has Harman Baweja, who recently shot his debut futuristic film "Love Story 2050" set in South Australia, in main lead and Anupam Kher, Amrita Rao and Gulshan Grover in other important roles. The movie 'Victory' is the directorial debut of Ajit Pal and will be produced by India's leading production house 'AdLab.'

When I met him it was a dream come true." (IANS)
